Placement Option for Kittens in Need of Homes
Kittens in need of homes are a special population that require an additional level of care and attention. SJRAS is committed to the health and welfare of the kittens in our community. Our KITs program gives caregivers a safe, compassionate option for placing kittens. Kitten caregivers will continue to care for kittens while SJRAS will provide medical treatment, vaccinations, and spay/neuter services prior to their adoption. SJRAS will also ensure that the kittens’ mother is spayed.
SJRAS KIT's Program Guidelines - Overview
Upon intake into the program, kittens will be released to the shelter and the shelter will be ultimately responsible for kittens’ placement. The caregiver will be encouraged to help find a home for the kittens. All adopters will follow SJRAS adoption protocols. The kitten/s will be adopted with up-to-date vaccinations, microchip, and spayed/neutered and the adopter will be responsible for the adoption donation.
- The kittens will be kept inside, socialized, and cared for including proper feeding and cleaning protocols. SJRAS will provide supplies and food if needed.
- Kittens will be vaccinated upon entry into the program (as long as they are old enough). Appointments will be reserved using an online system and will take place at SJRAS. There will be 15 days in between sets of vaccines.
- If the kittens develop any health concerns, SJRAS will provide medical treatment; the caregiver will need to schedule and bring the kittens to SJRAS for treatment.
- Kittens will be required to have 2-3 sets of vaccines before intake at the shelter, in order to prevent them from getting sick when they come in. The date of intake will be determined by the kittens’ age, health, temperament, and space available at the shelter. We cannot guarantee a time frame for intake at SJRAS.
- Kittens will be made available for adoption once they are vaccinated and old enough to be spayed or neutered. Caregivers are encouraged to help with placement for their kittens by networking within their neighbors, friends, and families. If someone is interested, they will be able to adopt the kitten by submitting an SJRAS adoption application and following SJRAS adoption protocol, including adoption fee that will include spay/neuter and microchip. Kittens will also be eligible to be transferred to approved Rescue/Shelter Partners.
- The KIT’s program is designed for kittens aged newborn to 12 weeks old. If kittens are older than 12 weeks, please visit our Rehoming page.
